LoGOz - Punk Festival gig this weekend / AcoustiCalendar Song #48

This Saturday December 5th sees LoGOz return to live action with a slot at the Riverside Rebellion punk festival held at the Westgarth Club in Middlesbrough. We will be sharing the stage with The Bermondsey Joyriders, Steve Drewett from Newtown Neurotics, and London to name but a few! This event kicks off  at 12 midday and we're onstage around 4pm. Tickets are £15 a pop or its £20 on the door. So get your best festive punk rock trousers on lads and lasses and get in the Christmas spirit and come and support this cracking Live event! 

This week sees my AcoustiCalendar project hit song #48 CHARLiE CIGARETTES. This a true sad story of a travelling old gentleman I bumped into about 10 years ago. It was by pure chance after a drunken night out in Ashington. I don't need to go into too much detail, it's all there in the words and melody of the song. But lyrically it's one of the most challenging tunes I've ever written, to get the sentiment across wasn't as easy as it sounds. So for that this is one my most rewarding tracks of the project. LoGOz - Trillians Gig Review + AcoustiCalendar Song #47 + 13.2 update

Thursday November 19th was a celebration of 2 things!

One being LoGOz first ever appearance at the famous reopened Trillians Rock Bar in Newcastle and secondly it was my birthday :) This one just had to be a success! After being a frequent thirsty socialiser in this fine music establishment over the years this would be only my second live appearance here! The first being back in the summer of 2010 with previous band The Blisters, also featuring a certain Carlos Bennett on drums! The place was filling up nicely as we ran through a quick soundcheck with a hefty set of sonic bollocks to it! After a quick liquid livener we hit the stage and ripped into standard set opener LONG TIME DEAD melting faces and whipping back hair in the process! This felt good! Paul was clearly enjoying his debut gig at Trillians as he pogo'd around the stage like Zebedee on Prozac! Carlos was as thunderous as ever as we blasted out a loud proud in yer face 40 minute set to appreciative faces old and new! As we mingled with the LoGOz crew and discussed another great gig, main band In Evil Hour took to the stage! The Darlington four piece fronted by the energetic crowd pleasing Alice powered through their old skool new skool no nonsense up tempo punk rock metal in true back to the future style, keeping the pace set right on 88 miles per hour throughout! I enjoyed my first time seeing the band and have a feeling I might be seeing a bit more of them in the future! 

By the end of the night things were starting to get a touch blurry as a few greedy well deserved celebratory drinks were quaffed in style! As I've spent past birthdays previously in different countries, different places with different people, it was cool to celebrate this one doing what I do best! Also it was great my mam and dad were there too which topped off a cracking gig for the band as well as a personal sense of satisfaction! Thanks to Barbara from Trillians for putting us on and everyone who made the journey to see us!

LoGOz - Leeds Gig review - AcoustiCalendar Song #46

Friday 13th saw us back in the LoGOz mobile road trippin' it down to The Packhorse in Leeds. I don't really believe in all that superstitious horoscope stuff anyway, but that's me, typical Scorpio ;) Seriously though all omens were good as we made good progress arriving at the venue at a decent time. We're no strangers to this place after playing here before in March 2014 with our hard rockin' buddies STONE COLD KILL and STILETTO FARM. So it was no surprise to see these two bands on the bill again and part of the reason we agreed to the gig. After unloading the gear into the side stage area Paul, Carlos and myself did our usual out of Town routine by heading for the nearest takeaway outlets. This time around we decided against Mahoods special man sauce, for a more safer Burger/Pizza establishment. So with stomachs kinda full we headed back to the venue to hear opening band MODERN DAY DUKES with their half arsed tongue in cheek deliberately 15 minute shambolic set, which included snippets of "Boom shake the room" and "The fresh Prince of Bel Air". I heard the guys had pulled out of the gig few days earlier due to half of their members not being able to commit but they'd rejoined the bill and just threw this daft set together! Strange like, but hey!

Next up were STONE COLD KILL who have recently lost main bass wielding frontman Ralph Robinson to his Fatha, Lennys band ASOMVEL. The band were ear piercingly loud and played straight up dirty rock n roll like the bastard sons of Motorhead. With the venue reaching its peak attendance for the night it was time for us boys to strut our stuff. To be honest the crowd was a little disappointing numbers wise, but that was in no way going to affect our performance! With the changeovers not exactly running to plan we were in danger of losing valuable stage time. But we had traveled to be here tonight and no one was gonna stand in our way! We blasted through a full on balls out (not literally) 35 minute set that had the small crowd and other bands gathered at the front and lapping up every lick, riff and melody. Particularly ANTI-SOCIAL MEDIA going down a storm! Even Pauls mid set string snap and end of set guitar smash only added the anarchy and energy of another cracking gig for the band! As we came off stage we were greeted by fantastic comments and compliments from the crowd and other bands. We hung out briefly and cracked with brothers Stel and Ralph, along with parents Lenny ASOMVEL and Deb Robinson from Starjack Entertainment, who spoke about an interesting media proposition for the band....watch this space :)  We only managed to catch a few rocking tracks by STILETTO FARM before we had to head back up to good old Northumberland. As we enthusiastically chatted about the great gig we'd just played and selected tracks for the playlist drive back, we were made aware on social media of the horrific events unfolding in Paris. This obviously took the shine off our mood a little with the realisation that innocent people had been killed while purely enjoying a night out watching Live music. Mindless. And an awful scary reminder of the modern world we live in.  As like everyone else our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in this horrendous tragedy.

LoGOz - Middlesbrough & Blyth Live Reviews + AcoustiCalendar Song #45

Saturday November saw LoGOz return to Live action at Liberty's in Town Middlesbrough. This gig saw us as main support to TV SMITH & The BORED TEENAGERS. With this being our first visit to this particular venue we found it easy enough thanks to my backseated eagle eye! As we entered the upstairs venue we were greeted warmly by the jolly Tees giant himself Promoter Mr. Steve Harland. While making ourselves comfortable we witnessed TV Smiths soundcheck which was mightily loud and impressive! With time pressing on there wasn't enough time for a soundcheck ourselves we were told we'd just have a quick line check before stage time. This wasn't such a problem when we spied the friendly bearded young gentleman at the sound desk, who had done a tremendous job at our last Boro gig so we knew we were in safe hands. So with everything in place we headed out to sample the delights of some Teesside takeaways! I plumped for some sort of spicy chicken wrap, whilst Carlos was next door ordering pizza and chips with added special sauce delicately presented by the charming assistant who proclaimed she was "an excellent squirter". Nice. Paul had a tab.

So as we made our way back to Liberty's the lads headed up to the gig I was busy finishing my dodgy wrap and got chatting to a friendly cigarette smoking lady who was attending the gig and asking if I was here to pay or play :) We got cracking on about how she had seen us in Middlesbrough with the Newtown Neurotics and that she had been there recently to see Crass frontman Steve Argumentative play a solo gig. As I chuckled away inside I couldn't bring myself to tell her that its actually Steve Ignorant! The irony on his name wasn't lost on me as she told me a heart warming story of how she lost the signed CD she bought from that said gig, and after emailing him he posted her a brand new signed CD personally free of charge. Crass? Steve Ignorant? More like Steve Diligent. Top man. 

The doors were now open and people were streaming in and first band WELD opened up tonight's proceedings in what was only their third gig. The band were industrious in their tight quirky alternative sonic hypnosis. I look forward to seeing these guys again. Next up all the way from sunny Spain were SUZY & LOS QUATTRO. Surely I can be forgiven for thinking they could've been some European Suzy Quatro tribute act. I was very wrong. They delivered a very impressive original slick sugary new wave pop rock set that had many a shaved head nodding and Doc tapping enthusiastically across the room! 

Our time had come and I must admit a few nerves had kicked

in, and not helped by my misjudged spiced poultry intake! Nevermind, these mild doubts were brushed to one side as we kicked in with a mighty LONG TIME DEAD that melted specs and smudged make up on the grinning faces pointing our way! We blasted through a full tilt 30 minutes and went down a storm. Even TV Smith seemed to agree, looking like Tom O'Connor's anarchic brother, he could be seen appreciating our set too, along with the QUATTROS and BORED TEENAGERS. It was also cool to see some familiar faces in the crowd singing along making us feel more than at home! Again another cracking gig for the lads and the reception was amazing and talking to people afterwards we really felt the warmth and appreciation that we really are doing something right here! Even QUATTROS drummer enthusiastically told me in pure broken English we were the best band he had seen all over the world and invited us to play in his hometown near Barcelona! So look out for the Spanish leg of LoGOz world tour 2016 !!!

Then it was the turn of TV SMITH & the BORED TEENAGERS who were playing a classic set of material from TVs old band The ADVERTS. Although to be honest its not a band I've heard too much from apart from the obvious GARY GILMOURS EYES Single I was well impressed by the ferocity and dynamism of the tunes. So this is definitely a band I'll be revisiting and look forward to checking out again very soon. Judging by the reaction of the crowd MR SMITH delivered the goods and at 59 years old showed no signs of slowing down just yet. With an encore of newer material in full swing we chatted and said our farewells to friends and fans and of course to Mr Steve Harland, who we thank for offering us this gig in the first place. Cheers. So as we drove out of the Teesside fog we were more than happy with the performance and reaction and cant wait to return in December...Watch this space ;)

Sunday evening saw us return to the very familiar haunt of The Tavern in Blyth. With the weather taking a turn for the worse and our early slot time of 7:45pm it was cool to be greeted by the LoGOz hardcore who had braved the shit conditions and the threat of work the next day to enjoy some Sunday punk rock fireworks of our own! Again we delivered a great set complete with some humorous banter with the intimately appreciative LoGOz brigade! We even came back in to a 3 song encore that consisted of SKELETONS, WHY AM I A LIAR and LITTLE O.C.D. Big thanks to everyone who came down, quite a few at the last minute too, we really appreciate your support. Cheers also to a rather refreshed Vince Race for putting us on and treating to some post gig SEX PISTOLS swear-a-thon sing-a-longs! Marvelous stuff.

All in all another brilliant weekend for LoGOz. We've also got another few buy weeks coming up with a gig at the Packhorse in Leeds on Friday November 13th. Then Thursday November 19th (my Birthday) sees us making our debut at the famous Trillians Bar in Newcastle. But more on these gigs later...Stay tuned.

After always having an interest in War history, especially WW1, what better way to pay respect to those who fought, by dedicating a song to them. Its written from the perspective a soldier on the frontline fighting and the atrocities they must have seen. The confusion they must have felt and the sheer horror for what they witnessed, and the nightmares they would've had to live with. And of course so many so young..and old that never lived to tell the tale. Solo recording + video / LoGOz gigs / AcoustCalendar Song #44

After a short break in the sun I think it's time to get back on the Internet blog trail. Although it's been a few weeks since LoGOz last gig things have been anything but quiet! 

The middle of October saw me back in the recording studio up at Mill in Alnwick, under the trusty engineermanship of Mr Ally Lee. Things hadn't got off to the best of starts when we had to doubleback halfway to retrieve a forgotten guitar haha! So after a slightly delayed start things could only get better. And indeed they did. Today I was recording a full band version of DEATH OF THE 7" SiNGLE. The plan is now to release this along with KEEP YA TiMBER iN & YA POWDER DRY as a double A Side Single on VINYL!!! Oh yes, the irony ;) So early in 2016 in the midst of the anti product pro download industry you will be able to have 7 inches of plastic wrapped beautifully in a snazzy sleeve that you will be able to cherish for the rest of your life like a true music aficionado! Oh and you'll need a record player too haha ;)

The recording itself went great and the song sounds cracking with a wall of guitars, stomping drums and a mini army of my voices giving it the the treatment it deserves! 

After the recording finished we thought we'd kill another bird

with the same stone! So in the idyllic setting of Alnwick we set up the video cameras and started shooting some footage for what will be the promo video to TiMBER! We got some cool stuff much to the bemusement and amusement of a few friendly local passers by! This is still a work in progress. Watch this space folks ;)

This coming weekend also sees LoGOz return to action with a couple of top gigs! Saturday November 7th sees us heading back to Teeside. We are main support to punk legend TV Smith & the Bored Teenagers at Libertys in Town Middlesbrough. Then on Sunday the 8th we're back on familiar turf with a gig at The Tavern in Blyth with support from The E Numbers. With another gig the following Friday the 13th in Leeds with our Yorkshire metal buddies Stilletto Farm & Stone Cold Kill, the end of 2015 is shaping up nicely! And it won't stop there so stay tuned kids ;)

Just time for a recap on the 2 AcoustiCalendar tracks that have passed me by during my recent holiday! Although we can all be forgiven for recharging the batteries once in a while ;) Song #42 pays tribute to the brilliant Ken Loach film KES with the track AN ODE TO BiLLY CASPER. This is my homage to one of my favourite movies ever and focuses on main character the underdog anti hero Billy. Last weeks Song #43 was the Halloween themed TRiCK OR TREAT with its spooky undertones and less commercial sound I really enjoyed the diversity of this one and adds to the variety of the project. So this leads us into today's Song #44 JACK FLAG. This is a purely fictional character based on a real life situation. The story of an old World War Two veteran confused and angry at the modern world he fought to live for. Serious stuff. Damn right. LoGOz - The Doll Gateshead Live gig review 05/10/15 - AcoustiCalendar Song #41

Friday night saw LoGOz back on familiar turf with another trip to The Doll at The Black Bull in Gateshead. This time we were supporting the (in)famous Punk Pop funsters DIRTBOX DISCO. We got to venue around 7:45pm in good time and were pretty much setting gear up within minutes. All going smoothly so far so good. Then as we were sound checking we were in formed that there had been a change of plan! What this meant weren't really sure as no one really explained to us! So as we had initially been booked as main support band, therefore being second act on we assumed this was still to be the case, right? Wrong. After a very comfortable yet noisy sound check, Carl was the man informed that LoGOz were now first band on and actually due onstage in 5 minutes! To say we were disappointed and bemused by this decision was an understatement! But with the room filling up quickly there was no time for questions! So we picked up our guitars and sticks and hit the stage just before 8:30pm with instructions to be off by 9pm!!! We answered all of these last minute changes and demands in the best possible way! By simply playing one of the best gigs we've ever done! It was pretty frantic stuff but we delivered 30 minutes of sweaty punk pop rock n roll originality :) The crowd were brilliant as we made new friends and fans, as familiar faces shined with sweat and sang along like an urban choir! As far as performing goes, it couldn't have gone better, but we still had a bitter taste in our mouth at the last minute slot time change. As this also isn't the first time it has happened. We just think it could have been dealt with in a better way. That's all.

Next up then was DEATH TO INDIE with their recent line up change. The guys gave us a generous 45 minute set of energetic originals scattered with a few tongue in cheek covers! The lads are still bedding the new boys in so didn't quite hit their usual stride, but its early days, and the signs are still there.

Then it was the turn of DIRTBOX DISCO who proceeded to give their adoring public exactly what they wanted! An hours worth of bubblegum razorblade laden 3 minute wonders. The highlight being the sublime "My Life is Shit". There was a lot of love in the room tonight for these chaps, but we certainly weren't feeling left out! The reaction during the gig and afterwards to the many folk we spoke to was enough to assure me and the boys we had made a big impact tonight. It was great to see a full room at The Doll. There's no reason why it cant be like that every week really? Thanks to everyone who came down and made a noise with us. You know who you are!

So onto Monday again and AcoustiCalendar Song #41 comes in the shape of DEAD END CiTY BLUES. This is a wander around some of the decaying urban streets of our locality. This is by no means disrespectful. Its purely honest and real. Every word is something I have either seen or heard with my own eyes and ears. It may be a dark tale but there's always a light at the end of it. You just have to find it. Last and definitely not least I'm sure you would like to join me in wishing our drummer Harry a very Happy Birthday for the 12th. Harry is still recovering from his recent Kidney illness and has had a tough time recently. So we wish him many happy returns and a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on LoGOz drum stool asap :)

LoGOz - Blyth Tavern Charity gig Review 04/10/15 - AcoustiCalendar Song #40

Friday night was originally supposed to see me playing an AcoustiCalendar gig at The Waterford Arms in Seaton Sluice for Acoustic Magic. But after hearing news that the kitchen had gone up in flames and a serious fire had broke out, the gig was unfortunately cancelled! Spinal Tap haven't got a look in with some of the misfortune we have all had this year! But Clemmy and I had a cunning plan to pitch a last minute intimate acoustic gathering idea for those who were already making the trip to the Sluice gig. But alas..maybe it was just all too last minute. So in the end we decided not to do it. But the good news is we are in the process of arranging a special Acoustic event in the very near future, so watch this space!!! Oh and apparently the Waterford Arms have bought a new toaster :)

So after what was looking like a dry weekend gig wise we were happy to take up local promoter Vince Race's offer of a last minute cancellation slot at his Syrian Crisis Charity event at The Tavern in Blyth on Sunday October 4th. Being no strangers to this place, (The Tavern that is, and not Syria) and the fact we were also rehearsing that afternoon at Pulse Studios just around the corner, it made perfect sense to do our bit for charidee and after a blistering practice we were all fired up and ready to (fund)raise hell :)

We wrapped up rehearsals just before 5pm and headed to the venue to be greeted by Clemmy and Jill, so all was well. As we entered the Tavern the last band were finishing their set, with a 50's rock n roll chick, stand up drummer and upright bass player banging out the finale of standard classic Johnny Be Goode! If the locals were expecting more of the same from us boys, they were in for a big surprise! As we set up our gear for a quick sound check the place was already healthily busy with generous giving Sabbath revellers, and a few familiar faces who had made their way to support us, as well as the charity of course ;)

As we launched into standard set opener LONG TIME DEAD we were loud proud and in yer face! That earlier warm up had done us good, but speaking of warmth it really was red hot as the Tavern turned into a punk rock sweatbox! We didn't care though we were having too much fun! Paul bopped til we stopped and Carl played one of the gigs of his life, we really hit a great stride and could've kept playing, but time was no longer our friend and we shot our final bolt with a frantic MEXICOLA. A great crowd again and a brilliant reception. Big thanks to everyone who came down, donated and helped make this a successful event. Cheers to Vince for asking us to play. Our pleasure. As we basked in the glory of another cracking gig and chatted with folks we stuck around to check out a few tracks of the next band, who I think were called Repertoire Dogs! As the band kicked off with a bluesy intro-mental, a tattooed punk goth rock girl was joined on lead geetar by Johnny Depp! Then hovering in the crowd I noticed a tall slender middle aged dude with an oversized Rod Stewart extensive blonde mullet wig, union jack spandex pants and stack heel boots! Yowza! He must be in the band! My suspicions were confirmed as he grabbed a mic and shared lead vocals on the opening unfamiliar track. While we were all trying to work out exactly what was going on, the band then took us by surprise and gave us a mash up fusion of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long with Madonna's Like A Prayer! Bizarre! Haha and for what reason I'm not so sure, but hey, the now well refreshed crowd lapped it up and it all added to the variety of a great day/night! 

So here we are on week and song #40 of my AcoustiCalendar project. This weeks track is NOW OR NEVER. This one was kinda born out of the frustration of things not happening quick enough for me! I'm quite impatient and want things done yesterday, even though I realise this is not always possible! I've dealt with quite a few frustrating issues over the last 10 years in and around the music scene/industry! So therefore the best way, for me, for better for worse, to get them off my chest is to write about it all. I just think after doing that show for over 2 years and it being specifically American Punk/Rock it was time for a new venture! Hence 'The PSYCHO RADIO Show'. This new format will feature some of my favourite bands, artists, songs, from the last 50 years and more!! With the first few shows underway I've already featured bands as diverse as The Wildhearts, Therapy? Adam & the Ants, AC/DC, Madness, The Beatles and The Proclaimers! This is also a chance for you to hear some bands that have maybe slipped under your radar, or maybe you have some that are under mine!
